Statistical Modelling and Optimization of Fermentation Medium for Lincomycin Production by Streptomyces lincolnensis Immobilized Cells BABT
Abdelwahed,Nayera A.M.; Gomaa,Eman Zakaria; Hassan,Amira A..
ABSTRACT Response surface methodology was used to optimize lincomycin production by Streptomyces lincolnensis NRRL ISP-5355 in submerged fermentation. Screening of fermentation medium components to find their relative effect on lincomycin production was done using Plackett-Burman design. Malt extract, dextrin, soluble starch and (NH4)2SO4 were the most significant nutrient influenced on lincomycin production. Central composite design was applied to determine optimal concentrations of these factors and the effect of their mutual interactions. The interaction between soluble starch and (NH4)2SO4 was found to enhance the production, whereas malt extract and dextrin exhibited an influence independent from the other two factors. Using this statistical...

Radioguided surgery for breast cancer: preliminary experience in Piaui BABT
Abreu,Benedita; Melo,Nayana; Vieira,Sabas; Abreu,Evandro; Abreu,João Batista de; Pádua Filho,Antonio de.
Intraoperatory detection and excision of sentinel lymph node (SLN), radioguided occult lesion localization (ROLL) and lesional resection, or a combination of these two procedures at one time in a same patient (SNOLL), are techniques that represent, at the moment, a significant advance in breast cancer surgery, procedures in clinical practice being established, as can be seen from the medical literature, as well as in this institution. Thirty-one patients with breast cancer were initially treated with the aid of radioguided surgery. Of those, 20 patients were submitted to sentinel lymph node biopsy, six have undergone only ROLL and five were submitted to a combination of the two techniques.

Stem cells and respiratory diseases BABT
Abreu,Soraia Carvalho; Maron-Gutierrez,Tatiana; Garcia,Cristiane Sousa Nascimento Baez; Morales,Marcelo Marcos; Rocco,Patricia Rieken Macedo.
Stem cells have a multitude of clinical implications in the lung. This article is a critical review that includes clinical and experimental studies of MedLine and SciElo database in the last 10 years, where we highlight the effects of stem cell therapy in acute respiratory distress syndrome or more chronic disorders such as lung fibrosis and emphysema. Although, many studies have shown the beneficial effects of stem cells in lung development, repair and remodeling; some important questions need to be answered to better understand the mechanisms that control cell division and differentiation, therefore enabling the use of cell therapy in human respiratory diseases.

Morphology and ecology of bivalve molluscs from Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica BABT
Absher,Theresinha M.; Feijó,Angela R..
Bivalve species were collected from shallow coastal areas of King George Island (Martel, Mackellar and Ezcurra Inlets of Admiralty Bay). Twenty one species belonging to 16 genera and 12 families were identified and their morphometric and morphological shell characteristics were described. Three main characteristics were found to be common to the majority of the bivalve species sampled: 1) thin fragile shells; 2) small size of individuals (76%), and 3) the lack of true cardinal teeth (72%). Comparison of calcium data from a tropical estuary and a subantarctic coastal shallow area suggested that the calcium in the sea water was not a constraint to shell building but shell thickness could be an adaptation to the efficiency of energy partitioning. Small...
